چکیده

Both the ethics of autonomous systems and the problems of their technical implementation have by now been studied in some detail. Less attention has been given to the areas in which these two separate concerns meet. This paper, written by both philosophers and engineers of autonomous systems, addresses a number of issues in machine ethics that are located at precisely the intersection between ethics and engineering. We first discuss the main challenges which, in our view, machine ethics posses to moral philosophy. We them consider different approaches towards the conceptual design of autonomous systems and their implications on the ethics implementation in such systems. Then we examine problematic areas regarding the specification and verification of ethical behavior in autonomous systems, particularly with a view towards the requirements of future legislation. We discuss transparency and accountability issues that will be crucial for any future wide deployment of autonomous systems in society. Finally we consider the, often overlooked, possibility of intentional misuse of AI systems and the possible dangers arising out of deliberately unethical design, implementation, and use of autonomous robots. 1 ar X iv :1 70 3. 04 74 1v 3 [ cs .A I] 3 1 O ct 2 01 7

Towards Trustworthy Intelligent Robots - A Pragmatic Approach to Moral Responsibility

Today’s robots are used mainly as advanced tools and do not have any capability of taking moral responsibility. However, autonomous, learning intelligent systems are developing rapidly, resulting in a new division of tasks between humans and robots. The biggest worry about autonomous intelligent systems seems to be the fear of human loss of control and robots running amok. We argue that for all...

Autonomous Movement Predicts Children's Moral Regard and Prosocial Behavior Towards a Social Robot Dog

Young children are remarkably prosocial towards humans. However, it is less clear what drives children’s prosociality towards non-human others. Here we explore the possibility that children’s moral regard stems from their understanding of others as autonomous beings. To investigate this possibility, we asked five and seven-yearold children to interact with a robot dog that appeared to be either...

Interactively Learning Moral Norms via Analogy

Autonomous systems must consider the moral ramifications of their actions. Moral norms vary among people, posing a challenge for encoding them explicitly in a system. This paper proposes to enable autonomous agents to use analogical reasoning techniques to interactively learn an individual’s morals.

The Liability Problem for Autonomous Artificial Agents

This paper describes and frames a central ethical issue–the liability problem–facing the regulation of artificial computational agents, including artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic systems, as they become increasingly autonomous, and supersede current capabilities. While it frames the issue in legal terms of liability and culpability, these terms are deeply imbued and interconnected with ...

Mental Mechanisms, Autonomous Systems, and Moral Agency

Mechanistic explanations of cognitive activities are ubiquitous in cognitive science. Humanist critics often object that mechanistic accounts of the mind are incapable of accounting for the moral agency exhibited by humans. We counter this objection by offering a sketch of how the mechanistic perspective can accommodate moral agency. We ground our argument in the requirement that biological sys...
